Hands-on Science Activities for High School Students

Help me give my students hands on opportunities to model some of the complicated topics of biology. These labs and activities will allow students to interact with topics such as cell division, cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

My Project

During Covid and the aftermath, our students were put online and in hybrid situations that took them out of the hands-on learning aspect in science. I teach Anatomy/Physiology and Biology. My students will benefit from the lab activities and supplies in many ways. First, the cellular respiration lab will support a unit we cover in biology that has been primarily covered with worksheets. This is an ineffective way to see the process and learn from the outcomes. They will be able to use the scientific method and make conclusions and connections with the topics. The models for meiosis/mitosis will help bring a complicated process to life with manipulatives. The blood pressure cuffs will give students focused on health care professions hands on opportunities to work with "patients" in the classroom. The lung model is a great visualization of gas pressures and shows a major concept in respiration. Finally, the white boards are useful for students to get immediate feedback on questions posed in class. Many students are not willing to share in front of a class, but answering a question and showing the whiteboard gives me the chance to have everyone participate and get immediate feedback. In Covid times, this was a huge part of the learning process that was missed.
