This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Having access to working lab materials is super important for my students because they are always more excited and engaged when they get to discover the concepts we are learning demonstrated in a hands-on way through an experiment. Scales and timers are two lab supplies we have been using consistently throughout the year - we have measured the rate of evaporation to learn about phase changes, the weight loss of a burning candle to learn about cellular respiration, and more.

Having more lab materials means more students get to engage with and try the experiments.

We will be able to move our labs from teacher demos and large group work to partner and small group work so more kids can participate. With scales that don't need to be plugged into the wall, students will be able to bring the scales to their desk instead of being crowded along the walls where only a few people are able to see. Many of our timers have broken throughout this year - we use them for almost all of our labs so better quality timers will definitely help our science class.

Students keep track of their experiment data in their science notebooks - they will use glue sticks to glue their data tables and handouts in their notebook.

With using many materials and tools we science, we also need a way to organize them. The cardboard boxes will be used to store reusable handouts and tools so they will be readily available to find and use the next time we need them. Lastly, the paper trimmer will be used to help me prepare handouts.
