A biology room should be full of living things. Students will benefit from having a class pet to learn about respect, empathy, their needs, and the responsibilities that come with them. We applied for a pet grant and we were approved. The students decided Guinea Pigs would be a perfect match for our classroom. So that the students can care for them we need a few more items.
Living creatures and the responsibilities that come with them in a biological environment is a great learning opportunity.
First, we need storage bins to keep supplies in so each student knows where to find food and bedding. Food is needed so students can feed the Guinea Pigs and learn what food is good for them to eat. Students will use the bedding to put down for the Guinea Pigs so they have an environment that meets their needs. Students will learn that chew toys are essential for Guinea Pigs to keep their teeth at a minimal length and that chewing is good for mental stimulation and helps relieve stress for the animal. The hideout house is for the Guinea Pigs to have a space to go into. These hideout houses will give them a sense of comfort. During the breaks and summer, everyone will help with the responsibilities of having a pet. For those students who can take a turn they will need a way to transport and care for the Guinea Pigs. The carrying case and the habitat plus cage will be used for the care of the Guinea Pigs over breaks and summer.
