My students need hands on learning to help support and deepen their understanding in math and phonics. We need Shapes, Measurement, Subtraction, Comparing Numbers, Beginning Sounds, Simple Addition, and Counting Instant Learning Centers.
Our school serves a large number of low income students. They face many challenges and obstacles outside of school. They have different backgrounds, learning levels and learning styles. It is my hope to provide engaging, creative, and meaningful learning experiences for my students to help guide them to their fullest potential. By using manipulatives and games, the students have the opportunity to use more modalities for learning (visual, auditory, and kinethetic) which can maximize the number of students mastering a skill quicker.
My Project
By using hands on materials, students have fun and engaging learning experiences. This then helps students take the skills being taught to deeper levels and have a better understanding of what they are learning. Practicing these skills as a "game" creates an experience for the student and the skills have a better chance to move from short term memory to long term memory, making it easier and faster for the student to recall the information. Furthermore, by having engaging materials it peaks the students interests and they will have a curiosity and a desire to learn the lessons and skills that are being presented in the activity. There are a number of skills that students need to master in both reading and math for kindergarten. Some skills are mastering letter name and sounds, the alphabet dice would create a fun game for them to practice the names and sounds of letters. Once they have mastered the names and sounds, they can move on to putting the sounds together to make words. They can focus on beginning, middle, and final sounds, using manipulatives can make learning these reading skills fun. Math centers also create a fun way to practice and master skills like comparing numbers, addition and subtraction and making ten. Having the centers, they can practice up to 4 different skills in a learning block in a fun and engaging way.
