Hands-on Reading and Math Extensions

My students need hands-on wrap around games to support vocabulary development, math centers for engaging small group practice, and Readers Theater for fluency.

My Students

We need to get up and move! Our class has a lot of material to learn this year and we want to make it as engaging as possible. With so much of a fourth grader's time spent in seats, we are requesting materials that are interactive and have students up and working together.

We are an energetic group of fourth graders.

Actually these materials will rotate through both fourth grade classes at our school. Our school has high academic expectations with an involved parent community. The parent support is key in that when we purchase small group materials, we know that if a teacher can't pull kids to work, then parent volunteers can. They are a vital part in helping to differentiate our school day.

My Project

These resources all encourage small group interactive learning. The math centers and fraction games will be used as pair extensions or in a small group with an adult. Reader's Theater will be used to practice fluent reading while getting students to engage in a play. "Wrap Around" games are a personal favorite of mine; they are great way to promote teamwork while reinforcing the specific skill being taught. Each of these are hands-on and kids get to be up around the room engaged in what they are learning. Fourth graders want to engage and move around even if the classes are larger because they have so much rigor

I believe that as children advance through the grades, teachers have to find and create resources that are fun for students and encourage them to interact with the content.

All the resources I've requested do just that while giving students time to work with each other to achieve a common goal.
