Hands-on Projects Encourage Student Exploration!

My Students

Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.

Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.

My Project

As a student, I struggled to connect with science. We were often taught out of a text book and concepts were only theoretical. I want to change this type of teaching for my own students and get them excited about science and the world around them. Therefore, I am asking for a number of things to help make science learning hands-on. We need glue to make slime; a color combining kit, tie-dye and t-shirts to learn about transfer of color; waterbeads, wikisticks, and foam to learn about different states of matter and how things change; a gem growing set to explore how things grow; and a glow set to explore light and refracting colors.

These tools will help make complicated concepts come to life in a way that is engaging for students.

My hope is to spark their interest so they explore and continue to learn outside of direct instruction lessons!
