My Students

Is school supply shopping something you remember with a rush of joy and anticipation? Can you recall the unmistakable smell of a new box of crayons? A folder that was just so YOU? Organizing your awesome toolbox right away? The blank pages of your notebook calling you like freshly fallen snow? As a teacher, the whisper of school supply sales captures me every year. Sadly, my students dream of this experience but most don't get it.

My 3rd graders are in a low income urban area, beset by economic challenges, trauma, and communication barriers that come from being second language learners.

The pandemic has depleted our families still more, forcing many to make difficult choices between work, family and health needs. For months, my students have been remotely learning to stay safe.

Despite this social isolation, they Zoom into "class" every day, all day, eagerly waiting to learn, patiently handling any technical glitch and managing new apps like pros. Fun online tools aside, they need at-home projects using scissors, glue, colored paper and more that I just can't afford myself anymore. Halloween's cancelled already. With more holidays approaching, can you help me give them back some hands-on fun?

My Project

The greatest gifts my students possess, along with their imagination, is their enthusiasm for each other. Learning remotely has isolated them even though we "see" each other every day. As interactive and engaging as online activities can be (and digital literacy is valuable), they are kids!

My 8 year-old 3rd graders need to use their hands for more than a keyboard!

They need to cut, paste, color, create. They need to invent, explore and strategize. I have tied projects to literacy through dioramas, posters, and character creations. When doing so, stories came alive in a much deeper way versus typing on a screen or using tricky online drawing tools. Every year, our students must write about a small moment in their life and make it exciting - it's a huge challenge. To help them understand how to build a story to a climax, I tasked them with creating paper rollercoasters, hoping to connect that "ride experience" with their story events. Working remotely with only plain notebook paper and some glue, it was amazing what they designed! To sustain and boost their enthusiasm, I packaged up some paper plates, old coffee stirrers, and a few sheets of construction paper for parent pickup the following week.

Getting these simple extras was like Christmas! They begged to try again! They used math to measure, and engineering to plan and revise. No videos. No confines of a screen or a universal product. Fine and gross motor skills were used! Best of all - they had pure freedom to invent, explore, and be themselves. They could not get enough! I want to give them more. More time, more materials, more opportunities to be kids and to make creations that are not digital, but personal. Sharing their work online together helped bring us closer, too.
