it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 118 students are stepping up to the challenge of chemistry with a goal that 100% pass their end-of-year state science test here in Nevada! My students particularly love hands-on materials that model the concepts we are studying. The Nevada Academic Content Standards require science students to create models and explain those models to others.
Two of the kits in this project allow students to model two of the most challenging concepts in chemistry: balancing chemical equations and stoichiometry.
These kits would help my students connect the mathematics of chemistry to physical objects. Similarly, the Modeling Cellular Respiration kit would connect chemical reactions to biology content my students need to pass their state exam.
My students are incredibly competitive. The two STEM Challenges in this project would channel that competition into increasing understanding of chemistry and building engineering skills. Engineering skills are another focus of the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Since those Challenges are designed to be completed in teams, students will also build skills in collaboration that they need after virtual learning.
