This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are first graders learning how to read. My goal for them is to read grade level appropriate texts. Most of them are on the right track to reading. However, I have a handful that are struggling readers. They need different tools to help them read.

My students are from low income households.

For most of my students, English is their second language. They struggle with learning how to read because their parents can't provide English language support. They are willing to learn, but don't have the resources. School is the only place where they hear the language and rely on it solely for English language acquisition.

My Project

All the materials will be used to help struggling readers master basic phonics skills. Students will be pulled in small groups to work on word study and phonics skills. They will create and manipulate words with the twist and turn word builders. They will use the magnetic sight words to practice basic high frequency words through memorization and word race games. They will use the magnetic alphabet letters to make simple consonant-vowel-consonant words. Once they have mastered that skill, they will move onto creating words with more complex patterns. They will use the phonics flip book as reading drills to become more fluent in reading.

Your donations will help students learn the basics of reading and set them up for success.

Children need fun and interactive ways of learning. Your donations will especially help the tactile learners who need to manipulate objects with their hands in order for new concepts and skills to stick.
