it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Rekenreks and measuring tapes used as number lines will give my students hands-on visual tools to strengthen their number sense. Many of my intervention students struggle with foundational math concepts like counting, addition, and understanding number relationships. Rekenreks offer a concrete way to build fluency with number patterns and operations while measuring tapes used as number lines help students grasp sequencing, skip counting, and place value. These tools will make abstract concepts more accessible and engaging, fostering a deeper understanding of numbers.
My goal for this project is to give my students the resources they need to build confidence and proficiency in math.
By incorporating these manipulatives into daily instruction, I aim to improve their ability to recognize number patterns, develop mental math strategies, and bridge the gap between concrete and abstract mathematical thinking. For example, a student struggling with adding within 20 can use a Rekenrek to visualize 8 + 6 by sliding beads to make a group of ten first, reinforcing number decomposition and place value.
My students' determination and eagerness to learn make them unique, even when faced with significant challenges. Even though they perform below grade level, they bring curiosity and resilience to every lesson. With the right tools, they can develop the foundational skills needed to succeed, turning frustration into confidence and helping them see themselves as capable mathematicians.
