My Students
My students are not only interested in their current classes, but they win tech high school competitions at the state and national levels. This school consists of student demographics from 13 surrounding towns who have to apply to get in, even though it is a public school. Most of the students give up studying music with instrumental and choral programs, something our school does NOT have capabilities of implementing in their academic schedules. Therefore, they take Music Appreciation classes with limited hands-on instruments experience.
My students have vocalized that they wish there were more hands-on aspects in the music classroom.
But, sometimes, there is this stereotype surrounding the traditional vocational technical school where the "bad boys" go. That is not the case here - we have students who are successful on all fronts: their shop classes, academics, sports, competitions, you name it. But there is a need for classes and experiences outside of their shops and traditional clubs and sports.
Therefore, the music department needs to offer more than textbook-based learning. These students need more hands-on experiences (instruments) to expand their engagement, interests, and even help coping with mental and physical health!
My Project
My students will be able to learn reading music and playing piano at a school that does not allow traditional band/choir/orchestra in their schedules - right now, there are barely any options for hands-on learning in music classes.
By helping my students play piano, it not only challenges them mentally, but it is engaging and also allows for more physical movement.
Stimulating class environments help relieve anxiety, depression, and are more enjoyable! Why not help students learn AND enjoy class time!?
