Hands-on Models for Dynamic Molecular Processes

My students need 6 flow of genetic information models, and 6 phospholipid membrane models for kinesthetic learning of difficult concepts.

My Students

The majority of my students are in accelerated or advanced courses and are ready to move beyond the basics. We are in a suburban neighborhood that is very supportive of our school. Our school is very competitive, and utilizes all of its resources to make learning experiences for our students fun and rigorous.

Even though my students are high achievers, my school does not receive a lot of extra, categorical funding.

This means that in order to provide many of the high level, costly experiences, I have to utilize my resources to locate additional funding. My students ask many questions that can only be answered with current research. My students love to learn! They are curious and smart. They challenge me everyday to stay current in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

My Project

Students learn best when they can use models with their hands to experience how a difficult process works. The Flow of Genetic Information models will allow my students to experience DNA replication, transcription, and translation in 3D! The instructions provided also have the students modeling different types of mutations and their effects on the resulting proteins. Learning by doing, rather than watching or listening, makes for greater comprehension and lasting memory. The Phosholipid Membrane models will allow students to model different types of membrane transporters and use them to predict what types of molecules will cross a membrane. This can be followed up with a lab activity that tests their predictions.

Good models allow students to make predictions and test them.

These model kits include several lessons that go from simple to complex, and rote memorization to application. These models can be used with multiple levels of courses and make difficult curriculum accessible. These particular kits are durable and detailed. Membrane transport, DNA Replication, and Protein Synthesis are some of the foundational concepts that these models will allow my students to more easily comprehend.
