Our classroom consists of 15 Head Start preschool students, who are more than excited about the world around them and are extremely eager learners. The children are curious about our environment and are always asking questions to further their own understanding. These children thrive on hands-on learning experiences, where they can be active participants in the learning process.
Our center is nestled in the heart of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, historically known as 'America's County' after 9/11.
While our county is known as an industrial/factory town, many of the factories have closed and employment opportunities for families are becoming sparse.
Each child in our classroom is unique in the sense that they have different families, interests and learning styles. However, each child comes to school excited to learn and ready to explore their environment. We utilize a variety of teaching methods and materials to ensure that each child's individual needs are met and are learning to their full potential. We are thankful and blessed to have such an active, curious, excited group of students who can't wait to embrace each days adventures.
My Project
In Head Start, we believe in giving children hands-on learning experiences where they can be an active participant in the learning process.
When children are participating in hands-on experiences, they have a higher likelihood to retain concepts being taught, are more actively engaged in learning, develop critical thinking skills and are able to connect to real-life experiences.
All of the materials in this project will give students the opportunity to explore, by being hands-on, mind-on learners!
The Crazy Shapes Magnetic Building Set, Roll & Race Activity Ramp, Bridge Building Engineering Center, I Can Build It Architecture Set, Design Builders and 3-D Magnetic Builders -Master Set will all be used for children to explore, build and create from their imagination! I am also excited to add pictures from our local community to challenge the students to recreate the pictures using the given materials.
The Alphabet Rockets will be used during small group activities, where the children will be able to practice letter recognition and alliteration skills while improving fine motor coordination. The Lakeshore Counting Cones, Ladybug Counting Box, Nuts About Math and Learning Lacers will be used during center times. During this time the children will have the opportunity to openly explore the materials, while making number and quantity connections, simply while playing with the given materials.
These materials will help the children open their minds and give them the opportunity to be directly involved in the learning process, by actively and openly exploring these materials through direct hands-on experiences.
