Hands on, Minds on Science!

My students need larvae to watch them grow into adults and understand the life cycles of insects and a genetic trait set.

My Students

What better way to understand life cycles than to see it happen! Students will be completely invested and gain confidence watching the larvae they feed and nurture become beautiful butterflies.

I teach 90 energetic, inquisitive, knowledgeable 5th graders at an inner city charter school.

The charter school is in its second year of existence so these students are its second group of 5th graders. Most come from low income homes and communities but the passion they bring to the classroom is worth so much more. They constantly ask thought provoking questions, consistently complete work and request to do extra research on topics that interest them. As a founding teacher we are always looking for ways to build an old classroom into a well equipped scientific learning space. This project will be a special treat!

My Project

My students will place butterfly larvae and food into a viewing container and be responsible for nurturing them to adulthood. Students will make observations about the changes and requirements at each stage of the life cycle. After approximately 3 weeks students will have a beautiful fully grown butterfly to place into our class observatory. Students will gain confidence as scientists and be fully engaged at seeing their hard work pay off when a beautiful butterfly emerges. In the second activity, students will learn about human inheritance and how certain traits are passed from parent to offspring. In order to bring these activities to fruition, I need a human genetic traits kit and a painted lady butterfly growing kit.

The underlying message to my students is that they can grow into whatever they want no matter how small or insignificant their beginnings.

No matter where they start in life, with the proper nourishment they can end successfully. Students will gain scientific knowledge about the life cycle of butterflies and compare them to other organisms. But more importantly the social knowledge that they are valuable, responsible and capable of producing greatness.
