My students need hands on manipulatives to use when learning about geometry (shapes and figures), statistics (M&Ms), and algebra and the real number system (dry erase board markers and erasers, number lines, negative/positive chips).

My Students

I co-teach 3 inclusion classes with a mixture of students who do and do not have disabilities. I also teach one resource class for students who need a smaller classroom environment and more direct instruction. My students are from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds - Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, and Asian. All of them like to use hands-on resources and have information presented in multiple modalities (visual, auditory, in graphic organizers). My resource students do well with concepts when they can see, touch, think about real world situations, and find ways to experience the learning rather than just being told some facts.

My Project

Students learn better with objects they can touch, see, feel, and manipulate. Rather than showing them a number line on the board, students will have their own dry-erase number line that they can draw on or physically move a marker from one number to another to find a sum, absolute value, or difference, for example. Then they can erase their number lines and move on to the next question. Students will also be able to physically touch points on the classroom wall number line and compare values. For example, one student can put his hand on -5 and another student touch -8. Then the class can more easily compare their values (because students get very confused about why -8 is smaller than -5). Students will be able to physically hold and unfold 3-D geometric figures to see their nets and have a visual and manipulative tool for finding surface area and volume. Plastic and/or foam cubes are great tools for teaching about volume of rectangular prisms, which is a 6th grade standard. They are often given worksheets with pictures of figures and asked to find the volume when they can only see the front, top, and right of the figure. They struggle to count the cubes that they can't see. With physical cubes that they can hold, they can build the figures. M&Ms and dice will be used for statistical data projects to make line plots and bar graphs and to find measures of center and variability. M&Ms appeal to students because they can hold and count the items of each color and because they get to eat the candy when the project is complete! This project will provide me with the resources I need to allow my students learning opportunities with manipulatives to which they do not currently have
