My Students

My first grade students in Pittsburgh are from a low income neighborhood where 90+% of the student body receives free lunch. Many come from single parent households and have families who struggle every day to make ends meet. These parents do the best they can for their children.

The children spend their time in my class absorbing all they can about the wonders of math and science!

It warms my heart to hear the children share their love of learning. I want to give them every opportunity to explore, experiment, and create with hands on activities and projects that will make learning exciting and fun. I believe that if I expose my students to a variety of experiences, they will continue to embrace Math and Science.

My Project

COVID has us beginning the school year with online learning and my new first graders first math unit will be addition. Unfortunately, they won’t have access to the manipulatives (counting cubes, white boards, etc.) that help them form a concrete understanding of the concept. I would love to provide them with their own set of magnetic counters and numbers to make learning math enjoyable and entertaining. I would love for them all to begin learning with the same tools and opportunities. I thank you for your kindness and consideration. Best wishes
