My students love learning and coming to school. My students especially like learning from hands-on activities. They enjoy working together and trying new things. I work with students who have developmental cognitive disabilities and students who are on the autism spectrum. Our class is in an inner-city public school and many of my students come from low-income families.
This is my first year teaching so I am very excited to start building my classroom community and provide my students with lots of fun opportunities to learn and grow.
My Project
By using hands-on math manipulatives, students will increase their basic math skills. When we read math stories as a class or in small groups, students can envision the problems using their imagination, and generalize math to the real world, not just a classroom or worksheet. By reading math stories I also hope to increase literacy skills while learning math
As they learn to cook and work on their measuring and other math skills,
students will learn the important life skill of making food for themselves and increase their independence.
Many of my students are working on time and money math skills. As we work together to improve these skills, they will develop the abilities they need to function in the community and shop for themselves.
These books and manipulatives will be engaging ways for my class to learn and practice these foundational math skills that will increase their independence and quality of life.
