Hands-on Math Learning for Struggling Kindergartners
Help me give my students learn the basic concepts of math My students are really struggling , and I know that math like the count ice cream shop, gumball grab and 3D shapes will really help.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an inner city school, and most of my students are at least one year behind grade level. To make matters worse, most of my students don't come to school with the basic materials that they need to be prepared. Examples of the materials I am talking about are backpacks, pencils, folders and notebooks. As their teacher, I have a huge, and expensive, task at hand.
With every student that enters my classroom, I hold a great deal of responsibility.
Not only do I have to make sure that they receive the best quality education I am capable of giving them, but I also have to supply them with materials; if I don't they, won't have them - simple as that!
My Project
My students have come into kindergarten with limited supplies and a lack of basic math knowledge because most of them didn't attend preschool. I really believe that having more hands-on math centers and manipulatives will help them understand math concepts better. The ice cream shop counting, gumball grab and learn to count dough mats will not only teach cardinal counting and number recognition, but it will demonstrate what addition and subtraction really is. The math software will be an engaging start to our morning, and the 3D and 2D blocks will be a great center to help my students recognize these geometric shapes. Finally, the headphones will help because my students work on the computer, and it gets distracting for them when they hear everybody else's computer.
