My Students

My students, and their families, are an amazing collection of people from a myriad of backgrounds. We enjoy challenges, hard work, awesome learning opportunities, and each other.

My class is a wonderfully engaged group of creative thinkers and brilliant observers.

We come from a great variety of backgrounds, both culturally and socioeconomically. We have a great range of learning styles, learning abilities, and learning approaches; however, we are all looking for the “why” in all that we do and that we learn. We are a Title I school, and funding can be a sticky wicket for us, but we prefer to engage ourselves and our families in creative, fun, educational activities that everyone can enjoy and benefit from!

My Project

I would like to create a collection of math "share bags" including a library of math skills specific books and their correlative games that students and families will be able to share and enjoy together. I would like to make a library that can accommodate sending a book home for the students and families to read and share together. Once they have finished reading the book, I would have a corresponding game that the families could play together to strengthen the student's understanding of the key math concepts. Once the family has both read the book and played their game, they collaborate on a project to share their understanding of the concepts that they learned. Once they're done with one cycle, they can check out another book and repeat the process!

Because I believe and understand that everyone is an individual and as such has their own style of learning, the families would be free to choose their books, as well as their method of presentation.

I would provide information and access to Prezis, PowerPoint presentations, videos, collages, written reports: whatever works best for that individual family. This is a truly powerful endeavor because the ability to discuss and explain math concepts—the thinking, ideas, logic, reasoning, etc.--is a skill that will benefit all students as they go through life. Not only will students be spending quality family time at home, they will be engaging in an educational experience that will help create lifelong skills and lifelong learners.
