Help me give my students with learning difficulties hands on math tools to help them with their basic math facts like counting, adding and subtracting.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I always try to make learning fun and connect to their lives, but sometimes it is hard as they have different experiences than me.
My students come from some of the roughest parts of Toledo.
All of my students are low SES and struggling to have the necessities that sometimes we take for granted. The majority of my students love coming to school because they get to eat two hot meals, see teachers that treat them like their own and have a safe environment to be kids. Many of my students are responsible for taking care of their younger sibling and our school provides them with a solid and safe environment to be the kids that they are. My school is a local charter school that focuses on character building and helping our students become young, successful adults. We try to teach the children the skills they need in order to be successful. My school commits to offering children in under-served areas the educational opportunities they need to reach.
My Project
Being in school for eight hours is very hard for many of my students who have trouble sitting still, which makes learning math even more difficult. Many of my students are ADHD and have learning disabilities. I would use the math manipulatives to help them release some of the energy while learning math. In addition, most of my IEP students learn best with kinesthetic learning. My students with learning disabilities struggled to count, add, subtract and compute basic math facts.
Having hands on math tools will give them the support in order to be successful and reach their true potential.
My students cannot computer basic math facts in their head. They need the use of counters, number lines, pictures, etc in order to aid them in completing the math. By having a number line rug the students can hop to add, by having slider number lines they can show their work with sliding bars. These tools are vital for my students with learning difficulties to be successful.
