it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember learning about geometric shapes in school? Hexagonal prisms / pyramids / triangular prisms...all that. Chances are that you learned about geometric shapes by making models. That's just what I'd like to do with my sixth graders.
I have about 100 of them.
I teach Math to all the sixth graders at our K-8 center. As you know, people learn through doing, not by listening. I can talk to the students about geometric shapes until I'm blue in the face but most of my kids won't grasp the Math until...well, until they literally grasp the Math. They need manipulatives! Our school is not affluent and we would really appreciate the extra teaching materials. The children aren't going to learn just by using textbooks.
My Project
It's by actually making 3D shapes themselves that the children will internalize the math. I know that the materials in this project work because I have already used them! A teacher in another grade has one set, which I have tried out on one of my classes. The kids worked really well with them. However, I can't borrow another teacher's resources indefinitely, and I need many more sets for my one hundred sixth-graders.
Would you please help me liven up sixth-grade Math classes?
I know that these manipulatives will really help my students to learn about geometric shapes. They make Math practical. They make Math memorable. They make it fun!
