Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Right now my school district will start the year with virtual learning, but at this time have no idea for how long. Our families have a wide range of backgrounds. I may only know a few, but did see many on the playground in preschool before the pandemic forced the school to close.
For many of my kindergarten students, this will be their first school experience and I want to make it as positive, engaging and exciting as possible.
Some of my students may have had Transitional Kindergarten or attended preschool, but did not get to finish due to the COVID-19 outbreak. I would like to be able to provide my students with needed materials to use at home until we can safely return to the classroom.
My Project
In my class for teaching math, hands-on is the way to go. Whether teaching in the classroom or remotely, one thing is for certain and that is the need for hands-on materials.
Rekenreks are a math tool that each student will use as a fascinating way to learn many math skills such as counting to 20, comparing numbers, composing and decomposing numbers, and even addition and subtraction.
With the large Rekenrek, I will be able to model the math skill we are working on so that the students can follow along using their own tool.
Kindergarten is the beginning of their educational journey and these Lakeshore Learning Rekenreks will provide hands-on learning as they develop the needed math skills.
This project will be just what my students need to get started with hands-on learning.
