Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am privileged to be called teacher by my 25 middle school students from a tiny agricultural town in the southern end of the Salinas Valley. The entire k-8 school has 75 students, and a third of them are in my classroom. This is the middle school of our tiny school, grades 6, 7 and 8. It is my responsibility to teach them all subjects, including English Language Arts, Math, History, Science, and Physical Education, in one self-contained classroom.
My students are voracious learners.
A number of them are English Language Learners, with Spanish being the language spoken at home. On average, they are a bit below grade level, and I am determined to see them reach grade level in all subjects. They love to read, and devour books at an amazing rate.
These 25 students know each other well. They have been through years of school together in the same cohort, and consequently know the subtleties of each other’s behavior. They are good friends one to another. They support one another. They are a team. I am proud to be part of this tiny community of learners.
My Project
My students need my feedback on their work. But distance learning makes this very difficult. The use of iPads and Apple pencils will allow my students to share their work with me during distance learning. I will then be able to check their work and provide help. My students and I are determined not to lose a year of learning during COVID. Having iPads with Apple pencils will allow them to screenshot their work and send it to me. In the past, they've tried to take photos of their work with the computer cameras, but this is very clunky and hasn't worked.
