Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Typically, until 6th grade, schools focus on Math and English. Thus, students do not receive much exposure to Science until 7th grade. This can make science concepts both exciting and challenging for students. Hands-on science activities helps to minimize the difficulty and maximize the enjoyment!

Our school is located in a community overwhelmed with crime, drug-use, gang violence, poverty, single-parent homes, children left to raise themselves and their siblings, etc.

Unfortunately, although some of the most prestigious colleges are mere blocks away, most children from this area do not even graduate high school, let alone attend college. This just continues to propagate the problems that overwhelm this community in a vicious cycle that never seems to end. However, our school was created with the vision that EVEN children in this neighborhood can learn. The students at our school want to go to college and are willing to put in the hard work to get there. Every student at our school has been instilled with the notion that education is the key to lifelong success - and that it is not “if” they go to college, but “when.” As a result, our students have such a passion for learning, which is continually fueled by enjoyable lessons, such as those including hands-on activities.

My Project

As one of students' first "real" science classes, the lessons taking place in 7th Grade Life Science can be pivotal to encouraging interest and comprehension in future science courses. Typically, students who enjoy and understand science from an early age, have a better chance of entering into a science-based career. As the need increases for engineers, environmentalists, pharmacists, etc, it has become more and more crucial to encourage students to enter into scientific fields of study. In an unstable economic environment, occupations such as these offer financial and occupational stability, which is difficult to come by lately. Thus, utilizing hands-on tools in the science classroom, such as the genetics and cell replication model kits I have requested, helps to make otherwise difficult concepts easy and fun. This may effectively serve to remove the mental blockade many people place on science concepts, and alternatively motivate them to pursue continued studies in science

For a truly meaningful scientific experience, students must be allowed to EXPERIENCE science hands-on.

Model-based lessons allow students to perform true scientific inquiry and draw their own conclusions. As a result, hands-on activities help stimulate a life-long love for inquiry and scientific discovery. As a charter school which serves students from poverty-stricken families, oftentimes school is the only place where our children are able to exercise this part of their minds.
