My Students
My Kindergarten and First Grade students have been learning from home since the middle of March and will not be back at school before the end of this school year. For these students with autism spectrum disorder and other communication needs, it is very hard for them to understand why they can't be at school enjoying their daily routines. Their parents have been truly awesome at managing parenting, teaching and working in addition to keeping track of the schedule of teletherapy with OTs, PTs and Speech Pathologists and learning a LOT of new technology! I would like to give these families additional resources to use as we co-teach their kids in this new situation.
As five, six and seven year-olds, these students' best mode of learning is hands-on activities and their families need supplies in order to support this mode.
My students have school-issued laptops and we have been video chatting and providing support to parents through modeling. In order to improve the quality of instruction from me and the therapists, I would like to give each family a "goody bag" of materials they can use at home to promote hands-on learning.
My Project
While my students are learning at home they need hands-on, age appropriate materials so they can be active participants in their online lessons and teletherapy sessions. Materials such as dry erase boards, pipe cleaners, stickers, clothespins and markers are a part of our daily activities at school and need to be a part of their "school at home" experience.
These supplies will allow my students to develop language as well as fine and gross motor skills and will increase the connection between student and teacher during online instruction.
We will be able to draw, build, count and play together even though we are in separate places because we will be doing the same activity with the same materials.
