Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Resource Specialist in an elementary school in Baldwin Park, California. I work with students with learning disabilities, often with auditory or visual processing difficulties and/or attention deficits. I pull students in third to eighth grades from their classrooms to offer intensive instruction.
I emphasize essential academic areas of basic reading, reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. Without these skills, students have no hope of succeeding in school, yet these are the very areas where they tend to be weak. My students are always at least two years behind their peers in grade level work, and they need intensive help to catch up and learn methods that work for them. I work hard to make my lessons as involving as I can so that the children can do the work, succeed at it, and discover how much they can do if they are interested.
I constantly seek out materials that engage my students and help them learn. I use materials like learning games, manipulatives, modified books and other written materials that engage my students and help them successfully learn basic skills and comprehend grade level material. Modified and hands on materials are essential to my success as a resource specialist, but they are expensive. I have had to borrow materials I needed from other teachers or buy them myself. I desperately need funds to provide my students with these necessities to their success. I believe that success in school work is one of most important things I give my students.
My goal is that students will have confidence that they can do the work and find joy in learning instead of the alienation produced by constant failure. Money is not the key to learning, but having the materials that help students succeed is essential.
The materials I would like to order will reinforce reading comprehension and fluency and hopefully interest my students. I would like to be able to purchase 3 comprehension activities that students can use at their own desks: From Lakeshore, I would like At My Desk Comprehension Activity, Reading Comprehension Games Library, and Comprehension Quickies Card Boxes. I would also like to make available to my students four fluency reinforcers from Lakeshore.
Fluency is essential for comprehension, and comprehension is essential for students? success in academic work. However, building fluency involves repetition and practice. My students have disabilities that make building fluency and thus comprehension difficult. The more practice they can get, the better. These materials will involve my students so that they can succeed as readers. As they become better readers, they will become more successful students. However, these materials are expensive, and I will appreciate any help you can give.
