My students are preschoolers who attend our school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In this unique school, the staff teach and support young children with special needs in an inclusive learning environment. As a Licensed, 5-Star Developmental Day Program, children are served in a smaller class size setting to better meet their multiple physical and learning needs. The school enrolls up to 125 children from 3 years old to 11 years old. About 25% of the students do not have special needs. Children with and without disabilities play and learn side-by-side. The school primarily serves preschool children, but it also has a typical kindergarten class and two elementary classes for students with significant disabilities. Students are taught and cared for by a highly qualified and specialized team of teachers, therapists, and a school nurse that are dedicated to helping children meet their maximum learning potential.
My Project
Preschoolers love hearing stories and songs--these activities lay the foundation of literacy. I want to make my students' experiences with literacy come to life!
Using props such as flannel board or storytelling mitts will allow my students to expand their literacy learning.
The board books will put literacy in the hands of the children. Research shows that "hands-on" learning is most appropriate for young learners. With these props, the students will learn a variety of pre-reading skills from retelling stories and songs to creating their own stories and songs.
Help me support literacy development and make stories and songs more meaningful for my little learners!
