Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are mostly emerging English learners and all are considered impoverished. These materials will give them the opportunity to use evidence-based materials to promote their advancement in literacy. I have just completed several professional developments that explain the Science of Reading and I learned that the ability to manipulate letters to make words is a powerful addition for learning to read.
With the magnetic letters and whiteboards, students can build words, change beginning and ending sounds, and then write the words they create on their whiteboards.
They can take their learning even farther by using those words in a sentence and then with the portability of the whiteboards, they can share their sentences with classmates! In my classroom, we have a growth mindset, we strive to improve each day while giving ourselves and each other grace and room for mistakes. These materials also allow students to easily receive feedback and correct their errors. Research shows that immediate, corrective feedback is essential to forward progress. For example, if a child spelled "cat" with a "k" instead of a "c", they could switch the "c" for a "k" with ease. The physical letters also allow the children to visually distinguish the straight lines and curves, adding extra detail to their memory of the correct spelling.
My students have developed a can do attitude, enthusiasm for writing, and a willingness to "give it a go!" without expecting perfection. They have set reading goals for themselves based on grade level expectations and these materials will help them pursue those goals!
