Hands-on Literacy Centers

My students need a classroom clothesline and a sort and slide language activity literacy center that will allow them to practice CVC words, capital and lowercase letters, and beginning and ending sounds.

My Students

When students first learn how to read and write, it is important for them to understand the relationship between letters and their sounds. To ensure that students understand that relationship, they need multiple ways to practice. The sort and slide language centers allow just that!

My students are smart and creative.

They love completing their assignments and working together to help each other out. My students are always smiling and excited to raise their hands to participate. Our school is in its third year as a turnaround school. Approximately 96 percent of students receive free or reduced lunches. Although my students face challenges, they are always eager to learn and focused on their lessons.

My Project

Reading! Reading! Reading! First grade is the year that a strong foundation in reading is established. This year we are focusing on reading comprehension and decoding strategies. In an environment where most students are left behind, I am determined that my students will succeed and excel. The center activities allow students to more hands-on approach to phonemic awareness, phonics, letter sounds, and word building. All four of which are essential in students' ability to read and write. Also, the clothesline allows me to hang directions and expectations for the activity center while saving wall space.

The sort and slide activity centers can be used over and over again.

Therefore, I can use these activity centers to help my students learn how to read and write from year to year. This year reading instruction will set a foundation that will affect the rest of my students' education.
