HANDS-ON Life and Earth Science projects for our Montessori Classroom!
Help me give my students the opportunity to study & replicate animal cells, plant cells, build volcanoes with clay and see the wonders of the planet through DVD's that take us under the sea!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a mixed-age Montessori classroom with students ranging from 6-9 years old (1st-3rd grade). They are independent and curious learners who want to know about EVERYTHING!!! They spend 3 hours each morning in uninterrupted work time where they are busy with mathematics, language, writing, history, science experiments, and research projects.
This group of students LOVE to study the universe and everything it contains, from planets and the solar system to rocks, dinosaurs, and ancient civilizations.
Montessori education allows these students to follow their interests while still meeting the common core state standards. All of their subjects are integrated into their learning, from writing, math, science, history, and writing. Their love of learning guides them to go deeper into subjects and learn all they can about the things that are of interest to them!
My Project
In our lower elementary classroom, we study the plant and animal cells, children look at them, learn the parts and draw them. Consider how much more amazing it would be to build it out of modeling clay!?!
Starting in the first weeks of school, students learn about the evolution of life on our planet, how awesome would it be for them to experience a dinosaur dig?
Or go under the ocean and watch an Echinoderm eat a muscle with a time-lapse video?
Looking at the universe with 3-D models, seeing the layers of the earth and the wonder and magic it all holds is a big part of a Montessori classroom! It comes to life when students get to see first hand the planets in a 3-D model that they can manipulate and reference, or they get to open up the earth to see the layers and then build their own models of the layers of the earth and landforms from clay. The pure joy of making a replica of a volcano and then getting to make lava flow from it, all while studying the science behind baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid)!
These are all the experiences that I feel will make science engaging, hands-on, enjoyable, and memorable!
