My students need materials that they can manipulate while they learn more about the alphabet and numbers, such as alphabots and translucent materials for the light table!
I am lucky enough to say that I get to teach and work with fourteen different 3-4 year old students every week. The days that my students attend vary each week but we have 8-10 kids per day at this point. My students are brilliant, curious, hard-working, funny boys and girls who learn by taking it all in with new experiences and materials. Our school is a Title I or "low income" school but that does not define these kids!
Most of my students have a diagnosis of autism - but that only makes them that much more special!
Young students can relate to new information more when they are involved. They enjoy hands-on activities where they can manipulate and play as they like. My students are all showing interest in letters and numbers so we are fostering that interest and incorporating these topics into all parts of our schedule.
My Project
Most of my students are beginning to show a strong interest in letters and numbers. As grown adults it is easy to forget back when you were still learning these basic skills, but this is a very important time in the lives of my kids.
These new materials will allow my teaching assistant and I to encourage our students to continue mastering their letters and numbers through fun and engaging play.
The letter and number materials that I have requested will provide sensory opportunities for my kids while they are learning other skills. The Wikki Stix provide a tactile learning experience while also working on a variety of other skills. We can use the light table as a place to practice and play with the translucent letters and numbers. Large storage containers will provide a contained space for us to work on tracing and fine motor skills one-on-one and in small groups. We are looking forward to all of the great new learning opportunities we will have to offer our students upon receiving these new materials!
