Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project will provide the materials for me to bring to life science! My students come from are low income, high poverty households. Many of my students lack hands on experience that allow them to connect the science curriculum the real world. They often struggle understanding concepts because they have not experienced them yet. I'm thrilled for the opportunity to give them these experiences.

We have focused our learning in STEAM based projects to connect their learning to tangible events.

I went through our science curriculum and found engaging activities to support their learning.

Our solar system unit will come to life by using the telescope to view planets and objects in the sky. We will build a solar system they can manipulate and a globe of the world to visualize the planet better.

For our environmental unit, we will crack open geodes and collect rocks from different areas of Utah to polish and study using the rock tumbler.

For our life cycle unit, we will plant a variety of vegetables and flowers using the gardening gloves and study root systems with the clear growing system inside the classroom. We will make wind chimes to study the weather patterns and let them take them home to share their learning with their families.

We will also explore literature by reading Shel Silverstein books and recreate his poems with hands-on experiments with our chemistry sets.
