Hands-on Learning

My Students

My classroom community is made up of 7th and 8th grade students who have been identified as students with a learning disability and have an IEP in place to make curriculum more accessible. My students are hands-on learners who benefit from movement and multi-sensory lessons. They are bright and creative and grasp concepts much easier when they have experienced activities that allow them to explore, build, inquire, and think without the worry of always doing things correctly.

I teach this group of learners three times a day.

They join my class for English Language Arts, Math, and Learning Lab. One day I noticed that one of my students took a special interest in a set of magnets that live on my desk as a fidget. His interest was so persistent, I brought in a circuit set that belonged to one of my children the next week. It had a few missing pieces, but I was amazed at the way he would problem solve and trouble shoot to overcome a missing part. The other students join him every day the last 10 minutes of class to build, explore, and create new circuit projects.

My Project

This project will help students become confident in their ability to solve problems and think outside the box. I am hopeful that activities like this will help them to build knowledge that will keep them engaged in their science classes that use lecture and note taking as a means of instruction. In addition, it will help to build confidence and spark an interest in STEM learning.

The chairs will help my students to learn comfortably in a space that is inviting and gives them the option to move while they are working.
