Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are awesome and like little sponges taking in information. They are quick to show me they are smart with repeating information learned from lessons. I enjoy listening to them and watching them at play when pretending to be teachers. I love hearing them use the academic language in their play while trying to teach their pretend lessons.

Many of my children in the class are from refugee, high poverty and second language learning households.

The children in my class don't have many resources at home to compare to the animals and insects we study in Life Sciences. Math tools and objects to count are scarce in my class and their homes. Parents of these children are either in English classes or working very hard for minimum pay to make it here in America.

My Project

I would like my students to have the opportunity to learn the life cycles , know the order of our solar system and have math tools to practice counting for number sense along with tools to measure weight and length of objects. They also need to understand magnetism and its attraction to metals. My students can use real life visuals and tools to practice their understanding of math and science.

I imagine my students measuring pencils, crayons, and markers with counting cubes, weighing blocks and books with a scale along with having life cycle manipulatives to look at during our study of animals and insects.

Students could use the life cycle magnets to show their understanding of the stages and put them in order for my assessments. I could also ask the students to put the planets in order from the sun to show their understanding while practicing using the vocabulary in sentences along with other students to promote their academic language.
