My Students
I teach a wonderful group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. The children I teach have the same drive to learn as students in more affluent neighborhoods.
I have been teaching in this same neighborhood for twelve years and for the past ten years, I have seen parents struggle to buy basic supplies for their children.
They often have to choose whether to buy school supplies or food. Needless to say, the parents chose to buy food. A lack of supplies can really hurt a student's self-esteem, which then affects their learning.
My Project
The most important math concepts for students to master are multiplication, division, and fractions and unfortunately, my 4th grade students always struggle with these concepts.
These three mathematical concepts will continue to be built on as they continue school and if they don't master these skills, they will struggle in school and in life.
Within each classroom there are different types of learners and these hands on manipulatives will help both visual learners and tactile learners. Not only will students be able to see and touch the manipulatives, they will have fun in the process and they will be more likely to retain the information.
