This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
While my students have grown up under high levels of poverty and therefore the stress that comes with it, they are hilarious, adventurous, passionate, and curious. Their imaginations run wild and their hearts are so gigantic that I am amazed every single day.
My 1st-3rd graders have learning and emotional disabilities, and many have directly experienced trauma.
Because of their disabilities, instructional content can often be abstract and therefore frustrating. My students love to build, create, and problem solve, and therefore hands on materials in our classroom are the key to active engagement, growth, and an all around love for learning.
My Project
Having manipulatives and activities like pattern blocks, snap and slide number bonds, and touch and reads will allow for my students to access the curriculum in a way that they currently cannot by visualizing the content.
By being able to engage in hands-on learning, they will make abstract concepts understandable and will be able to make both academic and social-emotional growth.
By ensuring that low income students feel like confident sense makers and members of a community in the classroom will allow them to hone their skills and make a positive change in their school, community, and in the world.
