Learning today requires a variety of teaching methods and strategies to reach all students in the class. Some of the teaching strategies used to differentiate instruction include note taking, technology applications, collaborative learning, and hands-on activities. My goal is to teach using a variety of methods and strategies. When the instruction is differentiated, all the students in my classroom are given the opportunity to learn the concepts.
My students are primarily 9th and 10th graders who are enthusiastic about learning and are stimulated by hands-on and cooperative learning.
My classes contain a mixture of students from a variety of backgrounds, including English language learners, students living in poverty, and students with special needs. Over the last several years the demographics of my school and area surrounding the school have changed, and these changes are making it harder on my school to close the achievement gaps.
My Project
The geometric tools and supplies that I am requesting for my students will allow them to learn geometry through hands-on activities. The Geometric Reflectors have the reflective quality of a mirror, which allows students to quickly see concepts of symmetry and congruence. It is also very helpful in studying transformational geometry, as reflections, rotations, slides, and flips are shown easily. The Geometric Construction Tools resource contains rulers, safe drawing compasses, tape measures, and protractors. These tools are essential for creating straight lines and small circles, as well as measuring angles and lengths in geometric constructions. The Circle Perfect Math Compasses are capable of drawing circles and angles, measuring lengths, and can be connected to draw tandem circles. These compasses are essential for the learning needed for the unit on circles. The patty paper is a geometric supply which is used as tracing paper. This paper provides teachers with another method to show and perform transformations to points, lines, and geometric shapes.
With these new tools, my lessons can be differentiated to meet all the needs of my students, which will give them the opportunity to construct their own meaningful learning in Geometry.
All of the tools will be used during several geometry units of study throughout the school year. Furthermore, all these tools will be most useful during the transformational unit. In this unit, the students are required to transform points, lines, and geometric shapes by performing translations, rotations, reflections.
