My Students

I am lucky enough to teach in the same district where I went to school. Being able to return as a teacher there and to give back to my community is an integral part of my mission as a teacher. Every morning I make sure to greet my students and give them time to connect as a community.

Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education" - Martin Luther King, Jr.

The goal in my classroom is to develop my students characters, as well as their intellectual capacities. Our room is filled with 29 students who are excited about learning. My school is located in a low-income area, 85% of my students quality for free or reduced-price lunch. The neighborhood is a mixture of cultures, first and second generation immigrants as well as students and families who have called it home for generations. Over 50% of my students are learning English. My students are from Samoa, Somalia, Vietnam, Mexico, and many other nations around the world. Despite the challenges they face in their daily lives, my students love to learn and have the drive to succeed.

My Project

My classroom is a place where students learn and explore. My school uses workshop method where independent learning is balanced with small group teaching. In order to teach small groups, students need supplies to use while practicing their skills. The supplies needed for this project will help students have the tools they need to be engaged with the work they are doing. I believe that small group instruction is the best way for students to master new learning and these supplies are crucial to a fully functioning workshop classroom.

These hands on tools will be used in writing, math, and reading every day in our room.

New classroom books will help students stay engaged in reading. Good quality literature is so important for fourth grade readers. It is pivotal time for students to fall in love with reading and having choice in what they are reading is so important. While they are reading, students are encouraged to stop and write their thoughts on post it notes to develop ideas about characters and theme. Students also use highlighters, sharpies, and post its to study short stories and practice their comprehension skills as readers. They will also use these supplies in their writing to edit and revise. My students come from low income homes and they are unable to contribute to the classroom supplies but still desperately need these supplies to learn.

In math, students will use fraction manipulatives to explore and play games to learn and discover theories about equivalency and size. These tools will also be used for students to model their mathematical thinking in different ways.

Every child deserves to have a classroom bursting full of the supplies, materials, and books to help foster their learning. These supplies will keep our classroom running smoothly all year.
