Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher working with 8-12 preschool students diagnosed with autism, sensory processing disorder, speech and language delay and multiple-handicaps with low cognitive skills. Some of my students are non-speaking or have limited speech. However, that does not hinder them to reach their best potential in participating with the use of personalized hands-on materials and basic supplies.
My goal is to provide a classroom for my students that is safe, organized, welcoming, exciting, engaging and offers opportunities for exploration, and prepares my students for future academic success.
My Project
Our class is in need of hands-on materials that would help students build their independence and at the same time promoting their life skills. I am requesting hands-on materials like file folders and task boxes that contain all of the engaging materials needed to teach a child a certain task or skill. We are also in need of batteries to replace the old ones from our classroom educational toys. We use educational toys that are recommended to improve hand-eye coordination, concentration, logical thinking, creativity and imagination skills, fine motor skills, etc. These "toys" are actually activities which are usually simple and structured and the child has to perform them for a short time.
Since individuals with autism tend to be visual learners who thrive on routine and order, stations with task boxes and file folders offer an effective strategy to teach and build upon important life skills.
