My students need alphabet stamps, a rhyming sounds game, dry erase markers and math manipulatives to help them master reading skills and basic math operations in the common core standards.
Think back to the student population in your elementary school class. Did you have a class full of ethnic diversity? Probably not. Every day I start reading with 16 students needing lessons in English proficiency. One of the best ways to teach them is through hands-on manipulatives.
I have two classes.
My homeroom class is made up of 23 students with varying backgrounds from low income to newly immigrated. My reading class is made up of 16 bright students that are eager to become proficient in the English language. First grade is the grade where foundational skills begin to mold learners into what kind of student and parts of society they will become a part of. I want to give my students the best understanding of the common core methods through hands-on experiences that will make learning meaningful for them.
My Project
The materials I am asking for will give my students the ability to make math, reading and writing relatable to them in their stage of learning. Children are eager to learn when learning is fun. Learning becomes fun when they are given the opportunities to use hands-on materials. The math beans will help my students understand addition and subtraction facts. My English Language learners have difficulty understanding rhyme and the rhyming activity will help them practice that skill. The stamps and the markers I have used in the past and my students pine for the opportunities to use them daily to build spelling and reading skills.
Donations to this project will help students master foundational skills in math, reading and writing.
I hope the experiences they have with these learning tools will provide a sense of excitement to learn, eventually resulting in them becoming significant members of our society.
