I work with the most interesting, unique, exciting, and fun students of all; my students are individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and physical and behavioral disabilities. My students are like every other student in the school, just a little bit cooler-to me.
As a result of my students having disabilities, they require a more unique and individualized education in order to learn.
These are students who are many grade levels behind and need a variety of interventions to allow what is being taught in their classrooms make more sense to them. The majority of them learn through a whole body experience, using movement, sound, audio, etc. to help things stick a little bit easier.
My Project
My students require and enjoy lessons to be taught in a different way. They hear and see what is being taught in the classroom, but do not always comprehend or retain the information. Time and evidence has proven that students that struggle in this way need material presented in many different formats in order to grasp the concepts. My job is to find fun, exciting, and interactive ways to present those concepts to them.
With the items listed, I will be able to create activities that can be used time and time again, over a variety of different settings; as well as give the students the ability to learn in a way that involves their hands and their minds.
Many of my students see things in picture form. I plan on creating adapted lessons from their classes by taking a concept (such as fractions), printing pictures of pizza or pies, and using the velcro to have them match the correct picture next to its equivalent numerical answer. I can also print sentence strips and have students place each word in the correct order to make a logical and complete sentence. These are just a few examples of what can be done with a printer, laminator, and velcro!
