This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are preparing for distance learning when school resumes this August. Incoming first graders are excited to read new books together, learn more about letters and words, and practice writing more independently at home. We will have more digital tools at our disposal than we did when distance learning began in spring, but young children still need to have hands-on experiences to connect to their learning.

First graders love a challenge and are ready for more independence even as they work from home this fall.

They work quickly, are proud of their work, and love to be able to share what they have done with others. In a virtual learning environment, they need to have appropriate materials at home so that they can show the words they have made, the pictures they have drawn, or the stories they have written to their classmates and teachers.

We have all gotten more comfortable with teaching and learning on zoom since school closed in March. This fall I hope to be able to make these sessions not only a time for students to connect and build community with their classmates, but also to demonstrate their work and learning.

My Project

My incoming first graders will be able to connect with their classmates during live zoom sessions and to practice their literacy and math skills using online platforms. I want to provide them with hands-on materials so that they can apply their learning outside of the digital environment and also share their learning with others once they've completed it.

This project will include support materials for engaging with read-aloud texts, as well as for writing, drawing, and doing math problems.

Normally in the classroom during a read aloud, children would be prompted to turn and talk with a partner about the book they are reading. This supports their oral language skills and comprehension. In our digital classroom, they will turn and talk to their cuddly stuffed elephants, which will not only support their comprehension but will also build community and engage their imaginations.

Magnetic letters and whiteboards will allow students to practice phonics by manipulating letters and then showing their work on screen, and math manipulatives will be important for making abstract concepts more concrete. Finally, children will use additional art supplies to create culturally diverse self-portraits which we will display and share in order to create a sense of belonging in our (virtual) classroom community.
