My Students

I teach students with autism and cognitive impairments. They need a lot of visual cues, models and hands-on learning opportunities.

These kids are living in a low-income, urban area and our school does not have the proper resources to facilitate the special learners that I teach.

Our school has over 90% of the student population receiving free or reduced-price lunch based on family income. The school struggles and cannot give us all the resources the kids need to meet their fullest potential.

My Project

The students are living and overcoming adversities every day. Fine and gross motor skills are difficult, as well as skill retention. In order to make education more accessible for them I use tons of manipulative's. The more opportunity for these students to practice skills on their own, the better they learn. The materials I requested are file folder games in language arts, math, science, and social science. These games have Velcro pieces that make the tasks manageable and eliminate the need for fine motor skills while still enabling the students to show what they know. The students will truly be able to answer and learn about things that are otherwise very difficult to communicate between teacher and student.

Giving these kids the manipulative's and hands-on learning tools from Lakeshore Learning will enhance their education on a daily basis.
