Hands on Learning for Increased Retention

Help me give my students hands on manipulatives to help them understand their math concepts. The document camera will help students see how to best use these manipulatives in understanding the mathematical concepts they support.

My Students

My students are full of energy and enjoy the hands on learning environment our school is creating. With an average of 12 students per class, students have the opportunity to be engaged in the discussions, lessons, & projects. As a math class, students are able to explore how numbers and algebraic thinking skills are used all around us.

We believe that learning should be fun and exciting and that youth should be actively involved in their education.

Our rigorous STEAM-based curriculum is delivered in a digitally-enhanced, project-based learning environment.

My Project

Manipulatives help students apply mathematical concepts to practical scenarios. Understanding fractions and their decimal equivalents is important for our students to be fluent with as they are used throughout the 6th grade curriculum. I currently have one set of the equivalency cubes and the students indicated that it was helpful in understanding the concepts of a fraction, as well as the decimal and percent equivalents. I am hoping to have enough sets so the students can use them, rather than be limited watch a demonstration with them. Thew magnatiles will help students apply their geometry skills to the construction of various figures - I am confident their imagination will create some unique structures!

Hands on learning allows students to use multiple senses in a fun and engaging manner that leads to increased retention.

In this project I am also asking for a document camera and magnetic grid for use in the classroom. It is important to show the students how to use their manipulatives so they can have the greatest impact. The document camera will help me show students how their manipulatives can be used at their desk and the grid will help show students how they can use the individual grid-whiteboards we already have.
