Hands-on Learning for Exceptional Needs Students Because Math Matters!

My students need math manipulatives & resources for hands-on learning to close their math achievement gaps.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Bevly's classroom raised $535

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are 6-8th grade Exceptional Needs in an urban, public, neighborhood school in the third largest district in the country. My school has been on academic warning status with the state for 11 years due to low test scores. The school wide averages in the 4th percentile in Math compared to the national average. My school enrolls 432 students in an old building that can hold 750.

I have my own room and co-teach with a general education teacher to service exceptional needs students.

We have fairly new laptops for every student in every classroom. Outdated Smartboards are used as a screen to project on from an Elmo. My school community is 100% African-American and 96% low income. Students live within the school boundaries. All students are developmentally delayed & some with learning disabilities, emotional & behavioral disorders, autism or speech & language impairments. Many students are victims of trauma. The area is gang and crime infested. Frequent police, fire and ambulance sirens and train chimes are heard during the day.

My Project

My Exceptional Needs Students need math materials & manipulatives for hands-on learning in small groups. These small groups allow me as their teacher to meet them at their level & address their needs. My students need to understand concepts like degrees & angles is very important. The problems arise when there is a need to understand the meaning behind patterns & geometric shapes. I am asking for protractors, ten graph boards, ten geometry templates, a set of Mini Judy clocks, math flip charts, common core connection books as well as materials to practice math word problems. My students don't have these manipulatives that appeal to their different senses to help them recognize geometric shapes & understand the relationship among them.

The materials for this project will allow my students to use hands-on learning to make abstract mathematical ideas more concrete, and ultimately decrease their achievement gaps by showing growth in Math.
