Hands-On Learning for Ancient Civilizations

Help me give my students books and materials such as, "Where is Chichen Itza" and terra-cotta pots so that they can have hands-on experiences during their study of ancient civilizations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged 6th graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events including craft night and our student-run multicultural fair.

My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.

My Project

A big theme for 6th grade social studies is the study of ancient civilizations including ancient Egypt, Greece, and Aztec civilizations. Providing opportunities to experience and reconstruct the past gives my students a better understanding of historical events and life in the past. During distance learning I want my students to go beyond digital lessons, and provide them with opportunities to engage in hands-on class activities- ultimately creating their own ancient civilizations projects.

Through hands-on learning activities like constructing a chinampa using corks and creating frescoes using terra-cotta pots, history will come alive for my students.

Having a class set of the novel, "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" will help my students build vocabulary related to ancient Greece and make real world connections to the contributions of ancient Greece. Informational books such as, "Where Was Chichen Itza" will be great research tools for my students to checks-out and allow them to build their knowledge on a given topic independently. By having materials available at home to enrich their investigations of the ancient world my students will have a deeper understanding of the past and its contributions to the present.
