My Students
Another school year is about to begin and I'm preparing to meet the upcoming 4th graders for the first time tomorrow. I don't know who they are or what they like or what they want to learn. An anticipation begins to build and it could be first day nerves, but I know it's also excitement because I can't wait to offer them the opportunity to return to hands-on learning. During Covid, I wasn't able to perform experiments or use math manipulatives. We couldn't attend field trips or play games. So this year, I know they'll be even more eager, even more thrilled to partake in these types of learning opportunities. After the year we had, these 4th graders deserve engaging, hands on learning experiences to make up for the time we lost. I'll be happy when I can provide that to them and - in turn - make them happy.
My Project
I know I am a successful educator when my students bring the classroom home with them. I know I have made an impact when my students internalize what they've learned and not just share information with their families, but when they become the teachers themselves. But these moments come at a price. The lessons need to be engaging and need to incite curiosity. They need to 'speak' to each individual. For that to happen, I have to go beyond what can be found between the pages of a text book. Teachers Pay Teachers is an example of a source where I can find hands on and engaging experiences such as projects, interactive games, coloring pages and much more. I can use these materials to bring learning to life and to find innovative ways to engage my 4th graders in the content.
