My Project
My Pre-K students are active learners that love to draw, paint and create art with a variety of materials. All activities in my classroom are hands-on. We learn through art and play! The art center in our classroom utilizes materials such as pipe cleaners, ribbon, sequins, markers, colored pencils, tape, paint, natural materials and recycled materials. My students create 2D art with items such as construction paper and markers as well as 3D art with paper rolls, popsicle sticks and recycled materials. I would love to increase the options for my students using the materials I have requested in this project.
My Pre-K classroom is an income based program that prioritizes services for low-income and at-risk families in rural East Tennessee.
We are located in a K-2 school in which all students receive both breakfast and lunch free of charge after receiving a grant due to the socio-economic status of our county. Many of the families served in my classroom do not have the extra funds to purchase art supplies for home. I strive to give my students opportunities they may not experience if they had not been in Pre-K.
My students are given the opportunity daily to participate if free choice centers that include the art center. Students are welcome to spend as much time as they choose creating. It is amazing to see where their imagination leads them! Art allows for growth in critical thinking skills, fine and gross motor skills as well as social-emotional learning. My students love creating gifts for family members and their friends at school. It is such a proud moment to see them share the joy of creativity each day!
