I know most teachers must feel this way, but I really have the BEST (behaviorally and emotionally supported teaching) five children in my classroom. Our program focuses on the whole child as we strive to teach our students not only academics, but also self-regulation and DBT therapy skills. When we are able to turn learning into games and hands on activities, our classroom is able to stay regulated and thrives in their learning! Because of this, we've had to get creative with how we teach, which is where I could use some help!
In our classroom, using concrete materials and games allows my students to engage in academics in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming like traditional practices.
Using tools like play-dough, kinetic sand, and legos allow my students to stay engaged when learning. They are able to write words in the sand or build letters with play-dough. I can use legos to help them break apart words and put them back together. Board games can also be utilized in this way where I can modify them to fit what each student needs academically. Art supplies also make learning more fun and less stressful and I have already seen great success with using gel pens instead of a pencil when doing academic tasks.
