Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I was a long-term sub last year and have been hired to work in the same 6th grade science position this year. I work at a Title 1 school, that also has a newcomer program (students who have just moved to the U.S.). I would love to have more hands on materials to be able to help my students understand that science it not just something that happens in one of their classes for 50 minutes each day, but it is everything around them everyday. The kids begged all year to do more labs and I want to be able to provide that to them.
My Project
These items will be used in my science classroom to help kids understand how heat is transferred from the sun to the Earth, from one object to another, and in the air. Then building on that knowledge, they will understand how weather works and why seasons happen and are different around the world. These tools will generally give them a better understanding of the world that they live in through exploration, and not just from readings or videos or notes or a teacher lecture. Thank you for helping me make science "real".
